The Story Behind the "Doors"

For those who know me well, they know I love beachcombing.  I love seeing what Mother Nature has made and left on the beach for me to find.

While serving a mission in Tonga for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, beachcombing became a much loved activity on our preparation days. I loved wandering along the beaches,  sandals in hand, toes squishing in the sand, looking for what became my favorite thing to find......."doors".....the little operculum (means "little lid") of the turbin snail, named because of its turbin shaped shell. The "door" is attached to the underside of the snail and can be drawn in when the snail wants to close up his shell, or swings outward so the snail can crawl around when it wants.

As the snail grows, it's shell grows with it. But the "door" does not. When the "door" becomes too small to cover the shell opening, it is discarded and a new one is made.

I became so enamored with acquiring these little treasures, that I soon found I had accumulated quite a trove. I decided I needed to justify my addiction somehow, so I decided to start making jewelry with them. Which has led to another addiction, I'm afraid.....the acquisition of wire and beads. Ah, well....what can I say?

In future posts I will show jewelry I've made, with descriptions and prices,  for those interested in purchasing. That's what this blog is about after all.

Hope you enjoy!
